The Interdisciplinarity of Collaborations in Cognitive Science.Bergmann Till, Dale Rick, Sattari Negin, Heit Evan & S. Bhat Harish - 2017 - Cognitive Science 41 (5):1412-1418.
We introduce a new metric for interdisciplinarity, based on co-author publication history. A published article that has co-authors with quite different publication histories can be deemed relatively “interdisciplinary,” in that the article reflects a convergence of previous research in distinct sets of publication outlets. In recent work, we have shown that this interdisciplinarity metric can predict citations. Here, we show that the journal Cognitive Science tends to contain collaborations that are relatively high on this interdisciplinarity metric, at about the 80th (...)

Right Versus Wrong: A Qualitative Appraisal With Respect to Pandemic Trajectories of Transgender Population in Kerala, India.Kesavan Rajasekharan Nayar, S. Vinu, Lekha D. Bhat & Surabhi Kandaswamy - 2023 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 20 (4):639-646.
The transgender population generally faces rights violations and discrimination in their day-to-day lives, which was exacerbated during the recent pandemic. This necessitates close scrutiny from an ethics perspective. Following directives from a 2014 Supreme Court judgement, Kerala became the first Indian state to implement a comprehensive policy to enforce the constitutional rights of transgender people. Despite such positive actions, a basic social tendency not to respect gender diversity has led to discrimination and marginalization. This was very evident during the pandemic. (...)

PUC: parallel mining of high-utility itemsets with load balancing on spark.Geetha Maiya, Harish Sheeranalli Venkatarama & Anup Bhat Brahmavar - 2022 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 31 (1):568-588.
Distributed programming paradigms such as MapReduce and Spark have alleviated sequential bottleneck while mining of massive transaction databases. Of significant importance is mining High Utility Itemset that incorporates the revenue of the items purchased in a transaction. Although a few algorithms to mine HUIs in the distributed environment exist, workload skew and data transfer overhead due to shuffling operations remain major issues. In the current study, Parallel Utility Computation algorithm has been proposed with novel grouping and load balancing strategies for (...)

Ethical international research on human subjects research in the absence of local institutional review boards.S. B. Bhat - 2006 - Journal of Medical Ethics 32 (9):535-536.
International health-related research on human subjects entails unique ethical responsibilities and difficulties. Often, these difficulties are augmented by the lack of a local ethical review infrastructure. In a recent cross-national study conducted by us, three critical components of ethical regulation were identified—external oversight, local oversight and subject involvement—and integrated into the study design. These three concepts are outlined and established as an important aspect of ensuring ethical coherence in the local context, particularly when reviews by the local institutional review boards (...)

    A new mixed MNP model accommodating a variety of dependent non-normal coefficient distributions.Chandra R. Bhat & Patrícia S. Lavieri - 2018 - Theory and Decision 84 (2):239-275.
In this paper, we propose a general copula approach to accommodate non-normal continuous mixing distributions in multinomial probit models. In particular, we specify a multivariate mixing distribution that allows different marginal continuous parametric distributions for different coefficients. A new hybrid estimation technique is proposed to estimate the model, which combines the advantageous features of each of the maximum simulated likelihood inference technique and Bhat’s maximum approximate composite marginal likelihood inference approach. The effectiveness of our formulation and inference approach is (...)

  19. Flavin‐containing monooxygenase (FMO): Beyond xenobiotics.Ajay Bhat, Faith R. Carranza, Angela M. Tuckowski & Scott F. Leiser - forthcoming - Bioessays:2400029.
Flavin‐containing monooxygenases (FMOs), traditionally known for detoxifying xenobiotics, are now recognized for their involvement in endogenous metabolism. We recently discovered that an isoform of FMO, fmo‐2 in Caenorhabditis elegans, alters endogenous metabolism to impact longevity and stress tolerance. Increased expression of fmo‐2 in C. elegans modifies the flux through the key pathway known as One Carbon Metabolism (OCM). This modified flux results in a decrease in the ratio of S‐adenosyl‐methionine (SAM) to S‐adenosyl‐homocysteine (SAH), consequently diminishing methylation capacity. Here we discuss (...)

How Stress Can Change Our Deepest Preferences: Stress Habituation Explained Using the Free Energy Principle.Mattis Hartwig, Anjali Bhat & Achim Peters - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
People who habituate to stress show a repetition-induced response attenuation—neuroendocrine, cardiovascular, neuroenergetic, and emotional—when exposed to a threatening environment. But the exact dynamics underlying stress habituation remain obscure. The free energy principle offers a unifying account of self-organising systems such as the human brain. In this paper, we elaborate on how stress habituation can be explained and modelled using the free energy principle. We introduce habituation priors that encode the agent’s tendency for stress habituation and incorporate them in the agent’s (...)

This article introduces the notion of duplex elements of the finite rings and corresponding neutrosophic rings. The authors establish duplex ring Dup(R) and neutrosophic duplex ring Dup(R)I)) by way of various illustrations. The tables of different duplicities are constructed to reveal the comparison between rings Dup(Zn), Dup(Dup(Zn)) and Dup(Dup(Dup(Zn ))) for the cyclic ring Zn . The proposed duplicity structures have several algebraic systems with dissimilar consequences. Author’s characterize finite rings with R + R is different from the duplex ring (...)
